Unusual and hand made American arts & crafts Sterling repousse cherries pin by The Kalo Shop (Chicago, IL). The brooch measures 2 1/8" across and 1 5/8" tall, and features a dimensional hand hammered and chased repousse design with two large cherries and three leaves in a hand cut frame. The detailed hammer work on the cherries makes them stand out and look real, which can be seen in the tilted view photo below. The reverse is signed HAND WROUGHT STERLING KALO 168. It has developed a nice patina from age, especially on the back. The piece is in excellent condition, and is a great example of American Arts & Crafts jewelry.
Jewelry and metalware by the Kalo Shop, one of the most famous American arts & crafts makers, is extremely well made and highly collectible. A brooch of identical design is pictured on page 51 of the book "Chicago Metalsmiths" by Sharon Darling. A history of the company, as well as many fabulous examples of their jewelry can be found on the Chicago Silver website. Other fine examples of Kalo jewelry are pictured in the Warman's Jewelry book series by Christie Romero.
